The Cake:
- Order a simple 2 or 3-tiered cake (you can have the 2 bottom pieces made from Styrofoam). Then order a large plain slab cake to cut up and serve to your guests. Please enquire with Cupids Touch if you would like a simple design, as we may be able to make your cake for at a much lower price then a cake store as we have lower overheads.
- Silk blooms (or fresh, untreated flowers) can be placed along the layers for a striking shot of colour, and gathered in a light vase or delicate basket for a bright cake topper.
- Find a non-commercial baker who works out of his or her home, and whole overhead is lower. Please enquire with Cupids Touch if you would like a simple design, as we may be able to make your cake for at a much lower price then a cake store as we have lower overheads.
- Look at places like the Cheesecake Shop that can make simple yet beautiful wedding cakes for much cheaper than 'wedding cake' shops.
- Keep decorations simple. Don't select a cake with extremely elaborate decorations, such as hand-made sugar lilies that looks as if they've just been picked.
- Don't save the top tier. Many couples save the top of their cake to eat on their first anniversary, and then take one look at the cake a year later and, sad to say, toss it into the garbage. Time doesn't do much to improve the quality or appearance of wedding cake. If, for reasons of tradition, you want to save something, consider keeping just one or two pieces of the top tier. Or, for your anniversary, have a duplicate of the top tier made.
- Don't let your caterer talk you into serving other desserts also. The wedding cake is the dessert, so save your money on the others. Negotiate to get rid of cake-cutting fees (get this in writing).
- Order less cake. If you're serving another dessert in addition to the wedding cake, plan on fewer servings of your cake. One layer may be all you need if you are serving other desserts.
